Vision and Programming:
HerStory Initiative: Sponsors and NICE are in partnership to run HerStory Initiative programs within the NICE community, including LitClubs and Story Summits, and to mutually promote one another’s campaigns wherever possible, including participation in World Read Aloud Day and Stand Up for Girls.
The LitClub Program: LitClubs are single-gender clubs that meet once a week for an hour or two hours per session. LitClub members are 10-14 years old, and LitClubs have 10-15 members and 1-2 Facilitators, who are local community leaders. HerStory Initiative Sponsors run LitClubs in partnership with locally based organizations that have access to community members who can become LitClub Mentors, groups of children who can become LitClub members, and safe spaces for the clubs to meet, and where they can connect with other LitClubs virtually.
The LitClub is a reproducible model of social and educational interaction based in self-expression, confidence-building, compassion-building, friendship-focused learning in a praise-centric, positive environment. LitClubs lead to dynamic improvement in reading, writing and leadership skills.
The Story Summit Model: Story Summits are full day events held monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly, for girls ages 10-16 and led by trained mentors and volunteers. Women and girls from the community are guided through workshop activities that encourage them to share their stories and learn from one another’s experiences. Story Summits build on the LitClub program’s strengths-based model, encouraging self-expression and community-building in a positive, praise-centric environment.
The LitCamp Program: The LitCamp model complements the work of LitClubs and provides intensive intervention and inspiration. LitCamps are one to five week intensive literacy and enrichment programs designed to combat reading loss that happens when children are not engaged in reading during pivotal out-of-school time.
Through the innovative combination of active literacy support, community building, and interactive lessons that span a variety of disciplines and interests, LitCamps provide children ages 5 to 13 with a fun, joyous, and safe way to learn and grow academically and personally and to see the value of a reading culture while creating one together.
How Do We Do It?
The HerStory Campaign ignites systemic change by:
- Launching literacy clubs that foster the power of story
- Training mentors to lead clubs and support girls’ learning journeys
- Providing resources for educational achievement such as books, technology and sanitary supplies
- Engaging entire communities to support girls as they learn and grow
- Leveraging social and print media to intensify the power of girls’ voices for change
- Enrolling allies in the movement to promote gender equality
Currently, this campaign is being implemented in 11 schools of the Kathmandu valley through 15 Lit Clubs:

Stand Up for Girls on October 11th
Stand Up for Girls is an annual day of action in honor of the International Day of the Girl, which happens on October 11th. On this day we mobilize our HerStory community and supporters to host Story Summits, local events led by trained mentors and volunteers that allow women and girls to share their stories and learn from one another’s experiences. Together we raise our voices on behalf of all the world’s girls so that they can build fierce, fearless futures, lit from within.
Stand Up for Girls mobilizes people of all genders, from all corners of the world, to advocate for a girl’s right to share her story and change the world. By learning to read, write, and share stories, girls understand that their words have the power to create monumental change at the community and international level.
The HerStory Campaign was created and led by two nonprofit organizations, LitWorld and Global G.L.O.W., and works to amplify the powerful stories of women and girls in their communities and around the world. On October 11th, the annual United Nations International Day of the Girl, we invite you to Stand Up and join our global community as we take action, highlighting the stories of girls from the world’s most marginalized communities. By liNICEing to girls’ own stories and acting on them, we can build a better world together.
